So Frito-Lay rolled out four new flavors of chips for their "Do Us A Flavor" contest. I accepted the challenge and tried all four (it helped that my local supermarket was having a sale on Frito-Lay chips). Below are my completely subjective rankings and opinions.
4. Cheddar Bacon Mac and Cheese
Not surprisingly these chips tasted like artificial cheese and artificial bacon. If you like those tastes you might like these chips. I didn't.
These were rather bland to me. They were sort of cinnamony and reminded me of last year's Chicken and Waffles flavor. But bland was still better than artificial cheese and bacon.
2. Wavy Mango Salsa
Now we're getting to the good stuff. These chips have a bold flavor like the Cheddar Bacon Mac and Cheese but in this case it's a good taste. They're citrusy fruity sweet which may not be everyone's bag but I really liked them. They're also the thicker wavy kind of chip so you could dip them in something else and experiment to find an optimum combination.
1. Kettle Cooked Wasabi Ginger
These chips only barely edged out the Wavy Mango Salsa. It could have been a tie but since I'm an American there has to be a winner. The wasabi isn't overpowering (unless you don't like wasabi). The line "you can't eat just one" applies to these chips. I ate about half a bag without realizing or intending to. Wasabi and kettle cooking make a dangerously tasty combination.
So that's my completely subjective ranking. I expect different palates will rank them differently. I won't buy any more bags of Cheddar Bacon Mac and Cheese chips. That's how much I disliked them. I've bought multiple bags of the other flavors (only to finalize their rankings of course) and will probably buy more of the Wasabi Ginger and Mango Salsa chips in the future.
