I found these pictures of snow art via Laughing Squid, which artist Simon Beck creates using snow shoes, an orienteering compass and a "reverse orienteering" technique. Apparently orienteering is a catch-all term for a variety of sports that require participants to use their navigational skills, often involving different kinds of maps and an orienteering compass.
Some of his previous work:
The work is difficult and temporary, able to be destroyed by wind or snowfall in a matter of hours or even minutes. Soft snow is very unforgiving, forcing Beck to place each step exactly right to achieve the pattern he wants. He says that he enjoys the fact that these pieces of snow art change with the light, and he likes to try to achieve three-dimensional effects with his geometric designs.
Seems like cold work to me.
