Some Quick Thoughts on Star Trek: Lower Decks

To be honest, I wasn’t blown away by the first episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks. Beckett Mariner was a bit too much. But I liked enough of the episode to give the show a chance. I’m glad I did because for me, it turned out to be the best of the current crop of Star Trek shows.

(Major spoiler for the season finale at the end.)

Unlike Discovery and Picard, Lower Decks gives us a Federation and Starfleet that I would want to be a part of even if the Cerritos is not Starfleet’s shiniest ship.

The show works best if, like me, you’re familiar with all the tv shows (including the original and the animated series) and the movies so you get references to a salt vampire or giant Spock.

I find it amusing that the actor voicing the Cerritos’ first officer is married to the actress who played the original Star Trek first officer Number One on Discovery.

But my biggest takeaway from the show is that Lower Decks Riker is much better than Picard Riker.
