I just finished reading a military science fiction book that takes place a few hundred years in the future in a setting much like an updated CoDominium with the Chinese as a third power. There is a reference just over ¾ of the way through to the first man on the moon - Virgil Grissom in 1967.
The revelation that this is a different reality isn't particularly significant. The author went out of his way to mention the moon landing but it has no bearing on what's happening in the book. It just struck me as an odd detail to throw in.
Since it is technically a spoiler for the book I avoided naming it but if you want to know...
I was reading Embedded by Dan Abnett
