Marvel Studios has now put out 9 feature films, with one more due out this year and two next year. They are a juggernaut and their success has partly been due to fantastic casting.
However... Robert Downey Jr can't play Iron Man forever. Chris Evans recently talked about stepping down after his contract is up. So, how do you think Marvel will keep their profitable cinematic universe running as people leave for other things? The already seem to be planning for Chris' departure, with their latest movie The Winter Soldier setting up a storyline which, in the comics, leads to another character picking up the shield. But how about Tony Stark and Thor? Will they retire these characters as the actors playing them leave, keeping the story going with new characters and actors in the armor? Or even retire these franchises altogether, leaving new characters like Ant-Man, Dr Strange or Nova to keep the universe ticking over? Or will they recast, opening the door for a James Bond-style franchise? And, maybe more importantly, will the strategy work? Will people still keep visiting the MCU after Chris Hemsworth and Robert Downey Jr have left it?
What do you think?
