(Almost completely spoiler-free but feel free to go wild in the comments.) Just got back from seeing The Last Witch Hunter and nobody left disappointed.
If you’re going expecting an Oscar-worthy film you’ve obviously not thought through what is entailed by a Vin Diesel movie with witches that also features Elijah Wood as Father Frodo Turtleneck and Michael Caine as a guy who’s mostly dead for the majority of the film. Go in with reasonable expectations and everything will be fine.
The special effects are mostly good though I thought the spells at Ygritte’s Magic Bar and Grill came off a little too “fairy dust” in comparison to the rest of the movie.
Give it a week and we’ll probably start thinking of plotholes but when you’re in the moment there’s not really anything that pulls you out of it.
WinnieTheWoot’s review: Surprisingly good, 4 out of 5 stars.
Dr. Mrs. Hatrack’s review: Vin Diesel needs to articulate, 4.5 out of 5 stars.
I’ll go with 3.5 stars, it’s a lot of fun but I tend to be less generous with my stars.
