The Tick: Thumbs Up Or Thumbs Down?

A new version of The Tick showed up as part of Amazon’s current Pilot Season. Basically the Tick is in a cage match with Kevin Bacon and Jean-Claude Van Damme to be the next Amazon series. Have you watched it and what do you think of this iteration of The Tick?

Since I’ll be discussing my thoughts on the pilot and there will probably be spoilers in the comments here is your warning.

I don’t remember much about the earlier TV versions and haven’t read the comics so I was able to judge the pilot on its own without trying to compare it too much to other versions.

The Tick is focused on Arthur as opposed to the title character. He is carrying around a lot of baggage from his childhood experience with superheroes and who will presumably be the Big Bad if this becomes a series. At this point I have no idea how that’s going to play out. I don’t think Arthur is unknowingly the Tick in a Tyler Durden sort of way though the pilot hints at Arthur not being a fully reliable narrator. Perhaps the Tick is a physical manifestation of a hero created in Arthur’s head and somehow given form in the world. (It’s a superhero show so why not?) There’s a lot set-up in the pilot and it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger so I would like to see what happens next.

Besides The Tick I watched Jean-Claude Van Johnson, which is a decent bit of self parody. I skipped I Love Dick because it didn’t appeal to me at all. Of the three I want Amazon to choose The Tick but everyone’s mileage may vary.
