Over on Vox there’s a great little article about how a guy created an AI to watch Blade Runner and Through a Scanner Darkly and re-encode it. The result is kind of fucking trippy but also really interesting in the sense of how the machine interprets various visual elements.
I only watched a few seconds of the side-by-side comparison and it’s immediately obvious that the computer discerns human faces better than nearly everything else. Because facial recognition is further along, I assume?
Anyway, if you like AI and/or Blade Runner, this is worth your time to check out.
I only kind of wonder what’s the greater end game for the experiment. Like beyond just being this funky experimental art thing, as mentioned in the article. What would the broader applications be? Hm.
