I know that every other day on ODeck someone is pressuring you to watch HBO's new show True Detective but they would be criminally negligent if they weren't to do so. It really is as great as everyone says is it is. Watch the opening credits. They make a promise that the show more than fulfills.
I love the work that Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey are doing in their middle age. Project after project they just produce excellent material. Both native Texans at the apex of their craft, the duo serve this exceptional Southern Noir particularly well.
Of special note, McConaughey's portrayal of Rust Cohle creates one of the most engaging characters I've encountered in a long while. A philosophical pessimist desperately trying to medicate himself against the gaping maw of existential nihilism, he is instantly relatable to me as I am sure he would be to many of you.
I can honestly say I am pretty in awe of HBO. They manage to produce such incredible stuff and having been doing so for well over a decade now. I can't think of another network that has brought this level of programming to TV. It blows me away time and time again. True Detective excels in all it tries to do. The last time I encountered a murder mystery of this depth was the Red Riding Trilogy and I think this has a good chance of being even better.
