On November 20, 1998 the first piece of the International Space Station was launched from Kazakhstan.

The Zarya* module, also known as the Functional Cargo Block (or the Russian acronym FGB), was designed to provide the initial power and propulsion for the station. With the later expansion of the station, the Zarya module is now used mainly for storage and its external fuel tanks.

*"sunrise" or "dawn" in Russian.
