It's been 15 years since Pokémon Fever gripped a generation of gamers with its western début on the Game Boy - but this week it enters its sixth edition, for the first time in polygonal 3D in a 'main' title, in Pokémon X and Y. Pokéballs at the ready, niners - it's time for a Pokétastic edition of Tuesday Game Room!
I've not played much this week, thanks to intense revision/freaking out for an Exam I had yesterday. With that out the way though (YAY!), I can dedicate myself to some relaxation for now! I got in a bit more time with Grand Theft Auto Online (when it wasn't exploding under the intense demand of GTA V owners desperate to get on), and finding myself how surprisingly enjoyable it is. Races are fun, as is the tense standoff of Freemode mixed with random, volatile players, but oddly enough Deathmatch is where it shines - the low health pool of characters in GTA V works to its benefit here, making for surprisingly tense and tactical games that rely on teamwork and positioning, even more so in the Last Team Standing mode.
The little else I've played this week is the Hearthstone Beta, which I got into at perhaps the worst possible time last Thursday - I've not played much beyond the tutorial thanks to revision, but so far it's a very slick, easy-to-learn-hard-to-master card game that oozes both solid Warcraft vibes (each deck is based around a hero class from WoW's original roster, and it's surprising how closely each deck fits their hero's playstyles in the MMO - Heals and buffs for Priests, totem support for Shamans, sacrifices and health taps for Warlocks, Beast management with Hunters, AoE and CC for Mages, it goes on!) and Blizzard's usual high quality. I can see myself playing a LOT of it in the near future!
Obviously, the big release for this week is Pokémon X and Pokémon Y for the 3DS, due worldwide (a first for the franchise) this coming Saturday. I don't think I've ever seen a Saturday release in the UK before, so that's a strange one! I eagerly await my copy of Pokémon X coming in the post. Which version are you plumping for, Pokéfans?
Aside from Pokémon it's still a hectic week. There's the latest in french-WTFery with not only the latest in Ubisoft's motion controlled madness in Just Dance 2014 on Wii, Wii U, PS3 and 360, but also Quantic Dream's new PS3 game Beyond: Two Souls, starring Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe in a supernatural tale of a young woman who finds her self connected as a child with a mysterious spiritual entity. It's a pretty good week for 'GOTY' editions too, with both Borderlands 2 and Dishonored being repackaged with their DLCs in shiny new boxes - but they're topped by the even SHINIER release of Farming Simulator 2013 Titanium Edition. You see that? TITANIUM EDITION!
Once again it's time for a few select picks from the last week of Gaming news, via Eurogamer:
- Xbox One controversy #472: MS moves to distance from comments on Kinect's advertising capabilities - Hoo boy. It was kind of going smooth for Xbox One lately, but this has certainly scuppered that. Whilst Kinect is effectively neutered thanks to the 180 on having it mandatory, the fact that this level of biometric data is being collected, and could've been used by third party advertisers when it was mandatory, is shady as hell.
- Half Life 3 is real! Wait, no it's not - the saga of Half Life 3 flared up again this week, with a trademark application appearing in Europe, but it turns out that was fake. Half Life 3 continues to be the video game equivalent of a Unicorn or something. In other unsurprising news...
- GTA 5 has already overtaken GTA4's lifetime UK sales, is the 12th best selling game of all time - Well, that was quick. It is crazy how much this is selling, so quickly. People still love themselves the GTA's. Meanwhile, Rockstar is hopeful that they've patched GTA Online enough that it doesn't immediately explode the moment you look at it. Let's hope so, it's kinda fun!
- My Life as a Pokémon Trafficker - I couldn't like Pokéweek go by without one Pokémon story, right? Rich Stanton shares his tale of a being a hardcore Pokémon starter breeder learning the magic of Pokémon... and Ditto. D'aaaaw.
We'll be back this time next Tuesday for more gaming discussion, but for now, sound off in the comments with the games you've been playing, and what you're looking forward to this week - and don't forget to join us on Steam!
