Someone recently mentioned the movie Twixt on the O-Deck. Even though they didn't describe it in glowing terms my curiosity was piqued. I hadn't heard of Twixt before but this 2011 movie written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola is streaming on Netflix. Minor spoilers ahead.
As you may have guessed from the top image the movie features Elle Fanning playing a mysterious girl. To be honest, if I ran into a girl looking like that in the middle of some dark woods, I'd probably head the other direction even if it was a dream.
But the movie would have been a lot shorter if Val Kilmer's character, a drunk and third rate horror writer, had not talked to her.
All in all it's a run of the mill modern gothic movie. It's not particularly scary though things get bloody towards the end. It's not as good as Coppola's version of Dracula but I think it may have been judged extra harshly because it's a Coppola movie.
One touch I liked was that the wife of Kilmer's character was played by Joanne Whalley, his ex-wife, which given the couple's relationship in the movie actually worked well.
Overall I'd give Twixt 2.5 out of 5 stars (or 2 out of 4 stars, whichever you prefer). If you like movies like The Skeleton Key this may be up your alley.
