On this week’s Face Off the four remaining contestants are tasked with creating creatures to inhabit King Kong’s home on Skull Island. It will take each contestant’s best effort to make next week’s finale. Who will be voted off the island? (Sorry, couldn’t resist.) Results ahead.
The semi-finalists are taken to a secluded outdoors spot to be presented with this week’s challenge. Joining McKenzie is Mike West, executive producer at Universal Creative, who introduces the challenge along with a spiel about the new King Kong attraction opening this summer at the Universal theme park in Orlando. The challenge itself is to create an evolved version of a creature from Kong’s Skull Island home. As a bonus, the winner of the challenge will also win a paid trip for two to Universal Orlando.
Melissa has an arachnid-crab creature. She manages her time well enough to get a lot of work accomplished. My only real quibble is with the eyes looking like a person staring out of a mask. The judges are blown away by it and Melissa is the winner of the challenge and the first person selected for the finale.
Walter has a canine-bat creature. He doesn’t the spring loaded pop out wings working but at least he has wings and a good paint job. Walter is the second on selected for the finale.
Rob has a dinosaur but when I saw his initial concept drawing my first thought was “he’s making a freaking Gorn.” He spends a lot of time on the sculpt (too much time) and doesn’t have enough time to properly paint his creature (or cover the underpainted parts with clothing). I would say his was the worst looking thing on the reveal stage. The head itself looks good but see the full creature below. The judges select him for the third finale spot.
Mel loses a lot of time at the start by scrapping her initial sculpt of her insectiod creature and starting over. But she puts in a lot of work and fabricates an exoskeleton suit. It’s not perfect though it looks better than Rob’s work. But the judges eliminate Mel.
The contestants going to the finale are who I expected though Mel did a good job this week. The judges obviously considered the totality of each contestant’s work when the had to choose between Mel and Rob.
Next week is part one of the finale. Rob has time management problems that the finale will probably exacerbate so I don’t think he will win. If I had to guess right now I would say Melissa has the best shot at winning but Walter has a good shot too.
