Raising Dion: Parenting a Super Kid

I thought this would definitely be shared over to io9*. But it has been 4 days now, so...Anyway, the art is wonderful. The story is sweet and funny. The first issue (PDF version) is free to download. The book’s video trailer is great.

Dennis Liu is the writer, mainly know for work in music videos, commercials, and film. He also did a sci-fi short called Plurality back in 2012.

Jason Piperberg is the illustrator and he’s done work on Megaman, Hellboy, and TMNT among others.

*If it does get shared by io9 staff from Sploid to io9, then I’ll unshare here (if I’m online).

What it's like for a parent to raise a superhero kid

We know the origin story for most of all our superheroes: parents die, a kid gets bit by a spider, other people get sent to Earth, some are just rich ass sociopaths. And we’ve seen superheroes before they get their powers when they’re Just Like Us but what we rarely see is what life is like through the perspective of a parent of a superhero. If being a superhero is tough, raising one must be even harder.

Dennis Liu and Jason Piperberg teamed up to create Raising Dion, a comic book that focuses on a single parent, Nicole, who is raising her 7-year-old superhero-to-be son, Dion. Liu writes:

Nicole, raises her 7 year old son, Dion, who has superpowers. Life was hard enough keeping up with the bills, let alone trying to keep track of her son’s invisibility, plasma powers, and telekinesis. In order to study his progress, Nicole films her son 24/7 with the help of her friend, Pat, who is an aspiring filmmaker. But when Nicole starts to notice mysterious men tailing her, and with Dion’s developing abilities constantly changing and becoming more powerful, she must find the courage deep within herself that she can raise Dion on her own.
