Miscalibrated Internet Receptor Stalks

(Note: not my collection.)

It seems like buying movies is becoming a thing of the past, at least for non-collectors. With streaming and the death of Blockbuster (not to mention the end of VHS), it seems like there are fewer outlets for physical media, beyond B&N, Best Buy, the odd surviving independent video store (and of course, Amazon). With this in mind, I thought I’d ask: What were the first movies you owned, and when, and in what formats?

VHS (1984): Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Trek: The Motion Picture (they were all sold out of Wrath of Khan). First movies taped off cable: Blade Runner, Escape From New York, and, I dunno, maybe Krull.

LaserDisc (1991): Criterion Blade Runner (barebones edition, 1982 theatrical version), Star Wars (aka “Episode IV”; letterboxed baby!)

DVD (1998): Blazing Saddles (never available in widescreen until then), also Blade Runner (director’s cut). (Yes, there’s a pattern here.)

Blu-Ray (2007): The Prestige.

Digital downloads: Um... I don’t remember? Maybe an episode of The Colbert Report ten years or so ago, mostly for the novelty of watching it on an iPod.
