We all have those characters who we just want to see GO for some reason or another. Whether because they no longer serve a purpose, are annoying remnants of a time long since past, or are simply boring to read.
I have 2, both from one of my favorite superhero franchises.
You guys know of my extreme dislike of Doc Ock. Anytime someone asks me why I didn't like Superior Spider-Man it always comes down to the fact that I just find Octavius the MOST. BORING. VILLAIN. EVER! He's generic mad scientist super-villain #7364 who turned to a life of crime..... because. Officially it was a lab accident that "damaged his brain so he became a villain" but come on. And then when Spider-Man 2 came around and they had a chance to give him a legitimately interesting origin story, they decide "f*$& it, let's just give him Mr. Freeze's and hope nobody notices".
Basically his whole thing is trying to prove just how much smarter and better he is then everyone else. Ock comes up with plan > looks to be winning > fails > "Curse you Spider-Man". Every single time. And it gets boring reading that same story over and over. Now that Superior is over, I really hope he stays "dead" for a good long time, but I just know he'll be back in a year or 2 and be back to having his pissing contests with everyone in the Marvel universe. And losing. Again.
Simply put, Aunt May no longer serves a purpose in Peter's life. She has been on her death bed SO many times it almost borders on self-parody. At this point, she isn't a character. She's a plot device. Peter needs a kick in the ass? Put Aunt May in the hospital. Need to make things "personal"? Have Aunt May be kidnapped. Need to reboot Spider-Man the most idiotic way possible? Have Aunt May be shot and NO ONE IN THE MARVEL UNIVERSE KNOW HOW TO FIX BULLET WOUNDS!
ARE YOU KIDDING ME? HOW CAN STEPHEN STRANGE, REED RICHARDS, AND EVEN DR. FREAKING DOOM OF ALL PEOPLE NOT BE ABLE TO FIX BULLET WOUNDS!?!
okay... okay... breath, Chrono, breath.
(Seriously, fuck you Quesada and your creepy desire to have your daughter date Spider-Man)
She's recently re-married in the comics (for the 5th or 6th time I think), and that could have helped her brake into an actual character again, but even that was treated as a plot device, her new hubby simply being a way to logically get Peter his own tech company.
Literally the only Aunt May I have ever liked (in comics, movies, or tv shows) has been Aunt May from the Ultimate comics, and even then I think they tried a little too hard to make her the "fun hippy".
Also, is anyone else really wierded out by the fact that May is supposed to be his Aunt and yet everybody writes and draws her as though she were his grandmother?
