Netflix is now streaming the first season of The X-Files in HD and 1.78:1 widescreen, reports The Verge. Rumors of a remastered version have been floating around the web for several years, with reruns of the show’s first four seasons airing in widescreen HD on a German channel called ProSiebenMaxx and in standard definition widescreen on Robert Rodriguez’s El Rey Network in the States. (Seasons five through nine were released in widescreen on DVD.)
With a six-part revival starring the original cast set to begin production this summer, it makes sense that Fox would begin ramping up interest in the 1993-2002 series. It’ll be interesting to see if these remastered episodes are reissued on Blu-Ray, since a similar effort remastering Star Trek: The Next Generation in the format resulted in lackluster sales.
